Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2025 – James Montgomery
As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we鈥檙e putting the spotlight on some of our incredible apprentices.
We recently caught up with nineteen-year-old James Montgomery, who studies at our Granton Campus, to find out more about his apprenticeship, his time at College, and his plans for the future:
What apprenticeship are you doing?
The apprenticeship I鈥檓 doing is in slating and tiling and I work for Greyfriars Roofing.
How are you finding your apprenticeship?
I鈥檓 finding it quite good, it鈥檚 got its challenges and stuff, but you鈥檙e here to learn. You鈥檙e always learning on the job and it鈥檚 good because you get paid to do it.
How are you finding balancing work with your studies at College?
I enjoy it because there鈥檚 some things I would learn at my work that I wouldn鈥檛 learn at college and it鈥檚 just learning different ways of doing things and dealing with stuff. It鈥檚 been good!
What would you say to someone who is thinking about doing an apprenticeship?
I would recommend doing it, you get to meet loads of new people and learn loads of new stuff, and it鈥檚 a really good experience.
What would you like to do once you鈥檝e completed your apprenticeship?
If all goes right, I would like to go to Australia for a couple of years and work over there. I would work away for a while and then come back, set up my own business, and just try and be as successful as I can be.
